Paphiopedilum delenatii

Paphiopedilum delenatii is a beautiful and highly prized slipper orchid native to southern China and Vietnam, with the best-documented natural populations occurring in Vietnam. It grows as a terrestrial or lithophytic orchid in humid, shaded forest habitats, often among mossy crevices and rocky slopes.

It is a relatively compact Paphiopedilum with attractive mottled foliage and large, rounded flowers. The flowers are typically soft pink to pale pink, with red and yellow markings on the staminode, and can reach approximately 7.5–8 cm across. The flowers are also fragrant, making this species especially desirable for collectors.

Care Tips:

• Light: Provide moderate, filtered light similar to Phalaenopsis. Avoid strong direct midday sunlight. The American Orchid Society recommends moderate light for P. delenatii.
• Watering: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow it to approach dryness before watering again, rather than allowing the plant to remain completely dry for extended periods. Use low-salt water when possible.
• Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine bark with perlite and suitable organic material. Excellent drainage is still essential.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, together with good air circulation.
• Temperature: P. delenatii can be grown under intermediate conditions. A general range of about 18–28°C (65–82°F) works well, with slightly cooler nights beneficial for growth and flowering.
• Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. The American Orchid Society specifically recommends approximately quarter-strength balanced fertilizer on a regular schedule.
• Airflow: Maintain gentle, continuous air movement, especially when humidity is high.
• Potting: Use a relatively small pot and repot when the medium begins to break down. Avoid burying the crown too deeply.
• Flowering: Keep watering, light, and temperature relatively stable while buds are developing. Avoid sudden changes that may cause bud or flower damage.
