Paphiopedilum Doll's Kobold is a compact primary hybrid between Paphiopedilum charlesworthii × Paphiopedilum henryanum. It combines the attractive broad dorsal sepal and elegant flower form of P. charlesworthii with the bold spotting and rich coloration of P. henryanum. The result is a relatively compact Paphiopedilum with flowers that are large in proportion to the plant, making it an excellent choice for collectors with limited growing space.
The flowers typically feature a pale to yellow-green dorsal sepal with pink to reddish markings, richly colored reddish-brown to mahogany petals with darker spotting, and a contrasting slipper-shaped pouch. Its compact growth and distinctive flowers make Doll's Kobold an especially attractive miniature-to-small Paphiopedilum hybrid.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, diffused or filtered light. Avoid strong direct midday sunlight. Paphiopedilums generally perform well under moderate light.
- Watering: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Do not allow the plant to remain completely dry for extended periods.
- Growing Medium: Use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining orchid mix containing fine bark, sphagnum moss and perlite. Some growers also incorporate a small amount of limestone material.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity around 40–70% is suitable, with good air circulation, especially when humidity is higher.
- Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions are suitable. Aim for approximately 20–29°C (68–85°F) during the day with cooler nights. Avoid prolonged extreme heat.
- Winter: Reduce watering somewhat during the cooler season, allowing the medium to become slightly drier between waterings while avoiding prolonged dryness.
- Fertilizing: Apply a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer regularly during active growth. Flush the medium periodically with plain water to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow to keep the foliage dry and reduce the risk of rot.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Avoid oversized containers that remain wet for too long.
- Repotting: Repot when the growing medium begins to break down, preferably when new roots are developing. Avoid unnecessary disturbance to the roots.
- Flowering: Consistent moisture, appropriate filtered light and a modest seasonal temperature change can help encourage flowering.
