Paphiopedilum emersonii

Paphiopedilum emersonii is a rare, compact slipper orchid native to southern China and northern Vietnam, where it grows primarily as a lithophyte on limestone cliffs and rocky habitats. It is characterized by a small fan of leathery green leaves and remarkably large flowers for the size of the plant, with individual blooms reaching roughly 8.5–10.8 cm across.

The flowers are predominantly white, sometimes with a very light pink flush. The pouch is creamy with pink coloration and deeper purple markings inside, while the yellow staminode adds a contrasting accent. Plants generally produce one, occasionally two flowers per inflorescence.

Care Tips:

• Light: Provide medium to bright filtered light. Avoid strong direct midday sun. Paphiopedilums generally perform well with about 1,000–2,000 foot-candles of light.
• Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist, but never waterlogged. Allow excess water to drain freely. Unlike many epiphytic orchids, Paphiopedilum should not be allowed to become completely dry for extended periods.
• Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated mix, such as fine or medium bark with perlite and other suitable organic components. Repot when the medium begins to break down.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity with good airflow is beneficial. Avoid stagnant, continuously wet conditions around the crown.
• Temperature: P. emersonii is generally suited to cool to intermediate conditions. Around 15–24°C (59–75°F) is a good target, with some variation between day and night.
• Fertilizing: Feed regularly with a dilute orchid fertilizer during active growth. Periodically flush the pot with plain water to prevent fertilizer salts from accumulating.
• Airflow: Maintain gentle air movement, particularly when humidity is high.
• Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Avoid allowing water to collect around the crown.
• Flowering: Keep the plant stable as buds develop and avoid sudden changes in temperature, light, or watering.
