Paphiopedilum exul is a rare single-flowered Paphiopedilum native to Peninsular Thailand, particularly the western and eastern coastal regions. It grows as a terrestrial or lithophytic orchid in wet tropical habitats, from sea level to about 50 m, often rooted in humus-filled rock crevices.

The plant forms 4–5 upright, linear, yellowish-green leaves, reaching up to about 35 cm long. Each inflorescence normally carries a single flower around 6.5 cm across. The dorsal sepal is white with maroon spotting over a yellow central area, while the petals are glossy pale buff-yellow with darker veins. The pouch is also buff-colored with darker venation, giving the flower a warm yellow-green appearance.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, filtered light. P. exul is one of the Paphiopedilums that can tolerate relatively bright conditions, but strong midday sunlight should still be filtered. The species has been documented growing in relatively exposed rocky habitats.
  • Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist, but never saturated. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid prolonged dryness.
  • Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine or medium bark, perlite, and suitable organic material. Since P. exul naturally occurs on limestone, a slightly calcareous medium can be appropriate.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity with good airflow is suitable. Avoid stagnant conditions, particularly when the medium remains wet.
  • Temperature: This is a warm-growing species from very low elevations. Aim for approximately 21–30°C (70–86°F) during the day with somewhat cooler nights. It should be protected from prolonged cold temperatures.
  • Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous air movement, especially in warm and humid conditions.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Periodically flush the pot with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
  • Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Repot when the growing medium begins to break down, generally about every two years or as needed.
  • Flowering: Keep light, temperature, and watering conditions stable while the single flower develops. Avoid sudden environmental changes during bud formation.
