Paphiopedilum Fanaticum is a primary hybrid between Paphiopedilum malipoense × Paphiopedilum micranthum.
The natural hybrid occurs from southern China to northern Vietnam, where the parent species grow in limestone-associated habitats. It combines the attractive rounded flowers of P. micranthum with the green coloration and compact character of P. malipoense. The flowers are generally soft green to yellow-green with purple, pink or reddish markings, often with a broad, rounded pouch.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, filtered light or light shade. Avoid harsh midday sun. Moderate light is particularly suitable for maintaining compact growth and healthy foliage.
- Watering: Keep the medium slightly and consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Avoid allowing the roots to remain completely dry for extended periods.
- Growing Medium: Use a light, well-draining Paphiopedilum mix such as fine bark, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of moisture-retentive organic material. A porous mix is preferable to a dense, constantly wet medium.
- Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 55–80%, with good air circulation.
- Temperature: Intermediate conditions are suitable. Approximately 18–28°C (65–82°F) during the day with cooler nights works well. The hybrid can tolerate a fairly broad temperature range.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the pot regularly with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt accumulation.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow, particularly when humidity is high.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with excellent drainage. Repot when the medium begins to break down.
- Flowering: A moderate day/night temperature difference can be beneficial for flowering. Keep watering and environmental conditions relatively stable while the bud develops.
