Paphiopedilum gigantifolium Braem, M.L.Baker & C.O.Baker is a large, warm-growing terrestrial Paphiopedilum native to South-Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. It grows in wet tropical habitats, particularly in steep, shaded ravines near running water, at around 700–1,000 m elevation.

As its name suggests, P. gigantifolium is notable for its very large leaves, forming a substantial clump. The upright flowering stem rises above the foliage and can produce several flowers successively. It is a warm-growing species that requires strong humidity, deep shade and excellent airflow, making it quite different from the cooler-growing green-leaved Paphiopedilums.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide deep, heavily filtered shade. Around 1,200–1,800 foot-candles is suitable. Avoid direct midday sunlight, which can easily scorch the large leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist but never stagnant or waterlogged. This species naturally grows close to running water and should not be allowed to remain dry for extended periods. Paphiopedilums lack pseudobulbs, so consistent moisture is important.
  • Growing Medium: Use an open, well-drained Paphiopedilum mix based on fine or medium bark, with sphagnum and perlite or similar materials. The mix should retain moisture while allowing plenty of air around the roots.
  • Humidity: High humidity is strongly recommended, around 70–80% when good air circulation is provided. Its natural habitat is humid and shaded.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm to intermediate-warm. Approximately 27–28°C (81–82°F) during the day and 19–20°C (66–68°F) at night closely reflects reported conditions from its habitat.
  • Airflow: Excellent airflow is essential, particularly when humidity is high. Continuous gentle air movement helps prevent bacterial and fungal problems.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Paphiopedilums can tolerate regular feeding, but periodically flush the medium with clean water to prevent salt accumulation.
  • Potting: Use a relatively shallow, stable pot with excellent drainage. Avoid oversized containers.
  • Repotting: Repot before the growing medium decomposes. Handle the roots carefully and avoid keeping the newly repotted plant excessively wet until it re-establishes.
  • Flowering: The flowering stem rises above the large foliage and can open several flowers successively. Maintaining strong humidity, stable warmth and good airflow is particularly important while the plant is developing a spike.
