Paphiopedilum hangianum is a spectacular species of slipper orchid native to northern Vietnam and parts of southern China, prized for having some of the largest flowers in the entire genus. It produces a single, broad, rounded bloom in soft pale yellow to greenish tones, often with a slightly sweet fragrance. The plant itself is medium-sized with thick, glossy green leaves arranged in a fan, and each mature growth blooms only once. In nature, it grows on limestone cliffs under filtered light, which contributes to its preference for airy, well-drained conditions in cultivation.
Features:
- One of the largest-flowered Paphiopedilum species (up to ~9–12 cm wide)
- Soft pale yellow to green flowers, rounded and full
- Often fragrant with a light sweet scent
- Single-flowered inflorescence (rarely two)
- Thick, strap-like, glossy green leaves
- Blooms typically in spring (April–May)
- Very slow-growing species
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, filtered light; avoid direct midday sun
- Temperature: Intermediate to warm (approx. 12–26 °C)
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, slightly drier in winter rest period
- Humidity: Moderate to high (50–70%+)
- Potting: Use airy, well-draining mix (bark, perlite, or limestone-based additives)
- Airflow: Good ventilation is essential to prevent root issues
- Patience: Very slow to mature—can take years to reach blooming size
