Paphiopedilum haynaldianum (Rchb.f.) Stein is a large, multi-flowered slipper orchid endemic to the Philippines, particularly the islands of Luzon and Negros. It grows terrestrially or on rocks, and occasionally as an epiphyte, in habitats including limestone hills and rocky cliffs. It is especially admired for its tall, arching flower spikes carrying several striking flowers, with creamy white to greenish dorsal sepals marked by deep maroon spots, elongated green-to-yellow petals with purple markings, and an ochre-green pouch. Individual flowers can measure approximately 10–12.5 cm across.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Avoid harsh direct midday sunlight. Slightly brighter light can support strong growth and flowering, but protect developing buds from excessive sun.
-
Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist during active growth. Avoid prolonged drying, but never allow the roots to remain in stagnant, waterlogged conditions.
-
Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix containing fine bark, perlite and a suitable moisture-retaining component.
-
Humidity: Maintain approximately 60–80% humidity with good air circulation.
-
Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions are suitable. Aim for approximately 20–30°C (68–86°F) during the day, with somewhat cooler nights.
-
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
-
Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow, especially in warm and humid conditions.
-
Potting: Use a stable pot with good drainage and enough room for its substantial root system.
-
Repotting: Repot when the medium begins to decompose, preferably as new roots emerge. Avoid unnecessary disturbance to established roots.
-
Seasonal Care: Water regularly through the main growing season. During cooler or less active periods, adjust watering to the rate at which the medium dries, without letting the plant become completely dry.
-
Flowering: Consistent moisture, bright filtered light and suitable intermediate-to-warm temperatures help support healthy growth and multi-flowered spikes.
