Paphiopedilum helenae is one of the smallest species in the Paphiopedilum genus. This rare and compact orchid is native to northern Vietnam’s Cao Bằng Province, where it grows on steep limestone cliffs and mossy ledges at elevations between 100 and 900 meters. It’s known for its delicate pale yellow to greenish flowers with a pinkish pouch and usually blooms in the fall and winter.

Features:

  • Leaves: 3–5 leathery, succulent, oblong-elliptic leaves, 3–12 cm long, with a few purple spots beneath near the base.

  • Flowers: Pale yellow to greenish blooms with a pinkish pouch, measuring 5–6 cm in diameter.

  • Growth Habit: Lithophytic (rock-dwelling), thriving in crevices and mossy ledges.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light (~500–1500 foot-candles); avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm to intermediate conditions; daytime temperatures of 25–30°C (77–86°F) and nighttime temperatures around 18–22°C (64–72°F).

  • Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels between 70–80% to mimic its native environment.

  • Watering: Water regularly, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings; ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

  • Substrate: Use a well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss; consider mounting on a piece of cork or rock to replicate its natural habitat.

  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength every 2–4 weeks during the growing season; reduce or eliminate during the dormant period.

  • Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement around the plant to prevent fungal and bacterial issues.
