Paphiopedilum Lady Isobel is a classic primary hybrid registered in 1897, created by crossing Paphiopedilum stonei with Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. It is considered one of the most important and iconic multifloral Paphiopedilum hybrids, combining the elegance and refined striping of stonei with the bold structure and horizontal petal spread of rothschildianum. The plant produces tall spikes bearing several large flowers with long, narrow petals marked in green, brown, and reddish tones, often held outward in a dramatic display. The dorsal sepal is typically broad and prominently striped, creating strong contrast and visual impact. Like its parents, it is slow to mature but highly rewarding, and it has been widely used in breeding to pass on its excellent form and multiflowering habit.

Features:

  • Primary hybrid: 50% stonei × 50% rothschildianum
  • Multifloral, typically 2–4 flowers on first bloom, more when mature
  • Long, narrow, slightly twisted petals with striped green, brown, and red tones
  • Broad, striped dorsal sepal with strong contrast
  • Tall, upright inflorescence
  • Medium to large plant with strap-like green leaves
  • Slow-growing; can take 7+ years from seed to bloom
  • Blooms mainly in spring to early summer

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, filtered light (similar to multifloral species)
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; avoid complete drying
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80% ideal)
  • Potting: Open, well-draining mix (bark + perlite; limestone chips beneficial)
  • Airflow: Strong airflow is important for healthy growth
  • Feeding: Regular, dilute fertilizer during active growth
  • Patience: Slow to mature, but becomes more floriferous with age
