Paphiopedilum leucochilum is a compact lady’s slipper orchid species native to southern Thailand, typically growing in humus-rich crevices of limestone cliffs. Its distinctive flowers feature a white to cream “lip” (pouch)—the origin of its name—contrasted by dorsal and lateral petals and sepals that are heavily spotted in burgundy or reddish-brown.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Avoid direct, strong sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
-
Watering: Keep the potting mix moist but not soggy. Water thoroughly, especially in warm conditions, but ensure good drainage.
-
Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as a combination of sphagnum moss, coarse bark, and perlite.
-
Humidity: Aim for about 40–60% relative humidity. Use a humidity tray or group with other plants if your home is dry.
-
Temperature: Optimal growing temperature is around 15–25 °C (59–77 °F).
-
Fertilizer: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer at a diluted strength. Flush the medium occasionally to prevent salt build-up.
-
Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years, or when the medium begins to break down. Use a fresh, airy mix to protect its roots.
