Paphiopedilum liemianum (Fowlie) K.Karas. & K.Saito is a compact to medium-sized, warm-growing Paphiopedilum native only to northern Sumatra, Indonesia, where it occurs around 600–1,000 m elevation. It grows as a terrestrial or lithophytic plant, particularly on limestone cliffs and in humus around limestone formations.
The plant produces narrow, dark green leaves that are often heavily purple-spotted on the undersides. Its upright inflorescence bears flowers successively, usually one or two open at a time. The flowers are approximately 8–11 cm across, with a cream to white dorsal sepal, purple-spotted cream petals and a distinctive pink-purple pouch.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide moderate, filtered light. Around 1,000–2,000 foot-candles is a good general range for Paphiopedilums. Avoid strong midday sun.
- Watering: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not constantly saturated. Water thoroughly when the medium begins to approach dryness and allow excess water to drain.
- Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-draining Paphiopedilum mix containing fine or medium bark, perlite and sphagnum or another organic component. Because P. liemianum is associated with limestone, a small amount of calcareous material can also be appropriate.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial. If humidity is high, maintain good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal and bacterial problems.
- Temperature: This is a warm-growing species. Approximately 21–29°C (70–85°F) during the day and 13–22°C (55–72°F) at night is a suitable general Paphiopedilum range, with warmer conditions particularly appropriate for mottled-leaf/warm-growing types.
- Fertilizing: Feed regularly with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Paphiopedilums can tolerate regular feeding, but flush the medium periodically to prevent salt accumulation.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous air movement, especially in warm and humid conditions.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with excellent drainage. Repot approximately every two years or whenever the growing medium begins to decompose.
- Flowering: The species produces flowers successively on the same inflorescence. Keep moisture, temperature and light relatively stable while the flowering stem develops.
