Paphiopedilum ‘Lola Bird’

Paphiopedilum ‘Lola Bird’ is a registered primary hybrid between Paphiopedilum emersonii and Paphiopedilum micranthum.

This hybrid combines the desirable characteristics of two members of the Parvisepalum group, producing attractive, relatively large flowers with a soft pastel appearance. Plants typically have compact, fan-shaped growth with broad green leaves, making them well suited to collection culture. ‘Lola Bird’ has also been widely used as a parent in subsequent Paphiopedilum breeding.

Care Tips:

• Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Avoid strong direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
• Watering: Keep the medium lightly and evenly moist, but never waterlogged. Paphiopedilum generally prefers more consistent moisture than many epiphytic orchids.
• Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine bark, perlite, and suitable organic material. Good drainage remains important.
• Humidity: Maintain around 50–70% humidity with good air circulation. Higher humidity is beneficial, but stagnant air should be avoided.
• Temperature: Moderate conditions around 18–26°C (65–79°F) are suitable. Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures, particularly at night.
• Fertilizing: Feed with a dilute balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically to prevent fertilizer salt accumulation.
• Potting: Repot when the growing medium begins to break down. Avoid excessively large pots, as they can retain too much moisture around the roots.
• Airflow: Gentle, continuous airflow is beneficial, especially under higher humidity.
• Flowering: Provide stable conditions while buds develop. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, watering, or light.
