Paphiopedilum Michael Koopowitz is a highly regarded primary hybrid between Paphiopedilum philippinense × Paphiopedilum sanderianum. The hybrid combines the broad dorsal sepal and more compact floral proportions of P. philippinense with the exceptionally long, twisting petals of P. sanderianum.
It is particularly valued for its long, spiraling petals and its ability to produce multiple flowers on mature plants. Compared with P. sanderianum, the petals are generally shorter, but the hybrid can still produce an impressive floral spread and a wider range of petal shapes, from relatively loose curls to tighter corkscrew forms.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Around 1,000–2,000 foot-candles is a good general range. Avoid strong direct midday sunlight.
- Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged. Paphiopedilums have no pseudobulbs, so prolonged dryness should be avoided.
- Growing Medium: Use a well-draining Paphiopedilum mix containing fine or medium bark, perlite/pumice and a moisture-retentive component. Keep the mix airy around the roots.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, ideally around 60–80%, with good air circulation.
- Temperature: Intermediate conditions are suitable. Approximately 20–28°C (68–82°F) during the day with cooler nights is a good general range. Avoid prolonged extreme heat.
- Fertilizing: Apply a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium regularly with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt accumulation.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow, especially when humidity is high.
- Potting: Use a stable pot with good drainage. Avoid oversized containers, which can keep the medium wet for too long.
- Repotting: Repot when the medium begins to break down or when the plant is actively producing new roots. Handle the roots carefully.
- Flowering: Mature plants can produce several flowers, sometimes on more than one inflorescence. Good light and stable growing conditions help encourage stronger flowering.
