Paphiopedilum niveum is a compact Brachypetalum-section slipper orchid native from southern Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia, with populations on Borneo and nearby islands.
It is a small, attractive species with 4–5 narrow, mottled green leaves, often showing purple coloration beneath. The flowers are predominantly white, usually marked with fine purple to reddish-purple spots, and have a rounded, fleshy appearance characteristic of the Brachypetalum group. Plants are reported to flower on short, upright inflorescences, usually producing one flower at a time and occasionally two.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, filtered light. P. niveum naturally grows in exposed limestone habitats and appreciates brighter conditions than many other Paphiopedilums, but strong midday sun should still be filtered.
- Watering: Keep the medium lightly and consistently moist, but never stagnant or waterlogged. Allow some drying between waterings while avoiding prolonged dryness. General Paphiopedilum guidance recommends maintaining moisture while ensuring adequate drainage.
- Growing Medium: Use a well-draining Paphiopedilum mix containing fine or medium bark, perlite, and moisture-retentive material. Because P. niveum is naturally associated with limestone, a slightly alkaline/calcareous medium can be beneficial.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity with good airflow is suitable. Avoid stagnant, constantly wet conditions around the crown.
- Temperature: This is a warm-growing species. Aim for approximately 21–29°C (70–85°F) during the day, with slightly cooler nights.
- Fertilizing: Feed regularly with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the pot periodically with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous air movement, especially in warm and humid conditions.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Repot when the growing medium begins to break down, generally every 1–2 years.
- Flowering: Keep light, temperature, and watering relatively stable while buds develop. Avoid allowing the plant to become severely dry during this period.
