Paphiopedilum philippinense (Rchb.f.) Stein is a striking multifloral, warm-growing Paphiopedilum native to the Philippines and northern Borneo. It grows from sea level to around 500 m, often on limestone, in leaf litter, rocky areas and sometimes on trees, including relatively exposed locations.

The plant forms large fans of thick, strap-shaped green leaves and produces an erect, branching inflorescence carrying multiple flowers simultaneously. The flowers can reach about 8.5 cm across, with white sepals marked with maroon stripes, long narrow maroon petals that often twist and curl downward, and a yellow pouch. The long, elegant petals are one of its most recognizable characteristics.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright light with some filtered or shaded sunlight. P. philippinense naturally occurs in relatively exposed habitats and generally appreciates more light than many compact Paphiopedilums.
  • Watering: Keep the medium consistently moist, but provide good drainage and avoid stagnant, waterlogged conditions. This species benefits from regular watering during active growth.
  • Growing Medium: Use a well-draining Paphiopedilum mix containing fine or medium bark, perlite and moisture-retentive organic material. Good moisture retention combined with excellent drainage is ideal.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, but strong air movement is important, especially in warm conditions.
  • Temperature: This is a warm-growing, multifloral type. Day temperatures around 21–29°C (70–85°F) and somewhat cooler nights are suitable. A noticeable day/night temperature difference can help initiate flowering.
  • Fertilizing: Feed regularly with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
  • Airflow: Provide good, continuous airflow, particularly when temperatures and humidity are high.
  • Potting: Use a pot with good drainage and repot when the medium begins to break down, generally around every two years.
  • Flowering: Maintain bright light, regular watering and a day/night temperature difference while the plant is approaching maturity. The species can produce several flowers on a single inflorescence, so avoid cutting a healthy spike prematurely.
