Paphiopedilum primulinum var. purpurascens is a colorful and less common form of Paphiopedilum primulinum, differing from the typical yellow “flavum” type by its richer, more complex coloration. Instead of bright yellow flowers, this variety displays greenish to bronze-toned blooms with noticeable pink to purple suffusion, especially on the pouch and sometimes along the petals. Like the species, it belongs to the sequential-blooming Cochlopetalum group, producing multiple small flowers one after another on a single spike over an extended period, often lasting many months or even longer. The plant remains compact with plain green leaves and is highly valued by collectors for its unusual color palette combined with the long-lasting flowering habit.
Features:
- Color form of primulinum with pink/purple tones instead of pure yellow
- Flowers may show green, bronze, or reddish shading with purple markings
- Sequential blooming: flowers open one by one on the same spike
- Long-lasting flowering, potentially months to over a year per spike
- Small flowers (~4 cm) but produced continuously
- Compact plant with plain green leaves
- Less common in cultivation than the yellow form
Care Tips:
- Light: Moderate to bright indirect light (slightly higher than mottled-leaf types)
- Temperature: Warm to intermediate conditions
- Watering: Keep consistently moist; do not allow to dry out
- Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%)
- Potting: Open, moisture-retentive mix (bark + sphagnum + perlite)
- Feeding: Light, regular fertilizer during active growth
- Spike care: Do not cut the spike—it will continue producing flowers
