Paphiopedilum purpuratum (Lindl.) Stein is a small, cool-growing Paphiopedilum native to southern China and northern Vietnam, including Hong Kong. It grows mainly on mossy rocks, stony ground and humus-rich forest floors, often in shaded locations near streams.
It is especially attractive for its mottled green foliage and strongly contrasting purple-red flowers. The solitary flower has a white dorsal sepal with purple veins, purple-red to brownish petals with darker veins, and a distinctive purple-brown pouch. Flowers are generally around 7–8 cm across.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide low to moderate filtered light or bright shade. Avoid strong direct sunlight, particularly during hot weather. Paphiopedilums generally perform well around 1,000–2,000 foot-candles.
- Watering: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid prolonged drying, while allowing sufficient drainage to prevent root rot.
- Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-draining Paphiopedilum mix containing fine bark, sphagnum and perlite. Because this species naturally grows among mossy rocks and humus, the medium should retain moisture without becoming compacted.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity is suitable. If growing at higher humidity, maintain good air circulation around the plant.
- Temperature: Provide cool to intermediate conditions. Because P. purpuratum is a cool-growing species, avoid prolonged high temperatures. A general Paphiopedilum range of approximately 13–22°C (55–72°F) at night and 21–29°C (70–85°F) during the day can be adjusted downward when possible for this species.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically to prevent fertilizer-salt accumulation.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow, especially in humid conditions.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with excellent drainage. Do not allow the pot to sit in standing water.
- Repotting: Repot approximately every two years or when the growing medium begins to decompose.
- Flowering: In Hong Kong, flowering has been recorded mainly from October through January. Stable moisture, cooler temperatures and moderate filtered light help support flowering.
