Paphiopedilum randsii is a distinctive multifloral slipper orchid species native to the Philippines, particularly the island of Mindanao, where it grows on the forest floor in warm, humid conditions. It produces several flowers on a single upright spike, each bloom displaying narrow, often twisted petals with green, brown, and sometimes striped tones, along with a characteristic pouch that may show pronounced “ear-like” lobes. Compared to larger multifloral species, the flowers are medium-sized but appear elegant due to their sequential or clustered presentation.
Features:
- Multifloral species, typically producing 3–10 flowers per spike
- Medium-sized flowers (~7 cm)
- Petals often elongated, slightly twisted, with green/brown striping
- Distinctive pouch with auricula (“ear-like” lobes)
- Plain green, strap-shaped leaves
- Blooms mainly in spring to early summer
- Warm-growing, terrestrial forest species
Care Tips:
- Light: Moderate to bright filtered light (avoid strong direct sun)
- Temperature: Warm conditions (approx. 23–30 °C ideal)
- Watering: Keep evenly moist; do not allow to dry out completely
- Humidity: Moderate to high (50–70%+)
- Potting: Well-draining mix (bark, perlite, or sphagnum moss)
- Airflow: Good ventilation to prevent rot
- Feeding: Light, regular fertilization during active growth
