Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, often called the “King of Paphiopedilums” or “Gold of Kinabalu,” is one of the most iconic and highly prized slipper orchids in the world. Native to Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, it produces a tall, upright inflorescence bearing several large flowers with dramatically long, horizontally held petals marked in green, yellow, and dark red stripes. The flowers can be exceptionally wide and striking, giving the plant a bold architectural appearance. This species is slow-growing and may take several years to reach blooming size, but its impressive floral display and rarity have made it a centerpiece in both collections and breeding programs.

Features:

  • Multifloral species with 2–6 large flowers per spike
  • Extremely wide-spreading flowers (up to ~30 cm)
  • Distinctive horizontal petals with bold striping
  • Tall inflorescence (up to ~75 cm or more)
  • Plain green, strap-like leaves
  • Blooms mainly in spring (April–May)
  • Very slow-growing but long-lived species

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, filtered light (higher than mottled-leaf types)
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm with cooler nights (important for growth)
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; never completely dry
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80% preferred)
  • Potting: Open, well-draining mix (bark + perlite; can include limestone chips)
  • Airflow: Strong airflow is essential for healthy roots
  • Feeding: Regular, dilute fertilizer during active growth
  • Patience: May take 4–5+ years to bloom from seedling size
