Paphiopedilum rungsuriyanum is a rare and unusual slipper orchid species discovered in northern Laos and formally described in 2014. It is notable for its miniature size and beautifully tessellated leaves, combined with a distinctive single flower that features a helmet-shaped pouch with a characteristic V-shaped opening. The petals often show fine red to purple veining over greenish tones, giving the flower a refined and slightly exotic appearance.
Features:
- Miniature plant with tessellated (mottled) leaves
- Single-flowered inflorescence
- Unique helmet-shaped pouch with V-shaped neckline
- Petals with fine red–purple veins on green background
- Distinct three-lobed (tri-dentate) staminode
- Extremely rare and recently discovered species (2014)
Care Tips:
- Light: Low to medium, similar to mottled-leaf Paphiopedilum
- Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions
- Watering: Keep evenly moist; never allow to fully dry out
- Humidity: Moderate to high (50–70%)
- Potting: Fine, well-draining mix (bark + perlite or sphagnum blends)
- Airflow: Good ventilation is essential due to its sensitivity
- Stability: Avoid frequent disturbance; prefers consistent conditions
