Paphiopedilum sangii is a rare and distinctive slipper orchid endemic to North Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it occurs in montane forest. It forms a compact clump of attractive grey-green, darkly tessellated leaves and produces a solitary flower on a tall, dark brown, densely white-hairy inflorescence. The unusual blooms can reach approximately 4–5.5 cm across and up to 8.5 cm in height, featuring a green-and-cream dorsal sepal marked with purple-brown veins, raspberry-red and cream petals with green margins, and an olive-green, deeply pouched lip with darker venation and purple spotting. The strongly contrasting colors, hairy flower stalk, and unusual slipper-shaped bloom make P. sangii a highly desirable collector's species.
Care Tips:
- Provide moderate, filtered light to partial shade, avoiding strong direct midday sun.
- Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures, with good day/night temperature variation.
- Keep humidity around 60–80% and provide gentle but continuous air circulation.
- Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated medium such as fine bark, sphagnum, and perlite.
- Water regularly and keep the roots evenly moist, but avoid stagnant or waterlogged conditions.
- Allow slightly more drying between waterings during the cooler or darker season rather than keeping the plant constantly wet.
- Fertilize lightly with a balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth.
- Repot when the growing medium begins to break down or when new roots are developing, taking care not to damage the thick, sensitive roots.
