Paphiopedilum sukhakulii is one of the most iconic mottled-leaf slipper orchid species, native to northeastern Thailand, where it grows in shaded forest habitats along streams. It is a compact plant with beautifully tessellated leaves and produces a single, striking flower featuring a broad white dorsal sepal marked with strong green striping, contrasted by green petals heavily spotted with brown and often edged with fine hairs. The pouch is typically brownish to purplish, giving the flower a bold, high-contrast look. Highly influential in breeding, this species is a cornerstone of many “Maudiae-type” hybrids due to its strong patterns, compact size, and relatively easy cultivation compared to other Paphiopedilum species.

Features:

  • Compact plant with mottled (tessellated) green leaves
  • Single-flowered inflorescence with blooms up to ~12–14 cm
  • Broad white dorsal sepal with bold green stripes
  • Petals green with brown/purple spotting, often slightly hairy
  • Pouch typically brown to purplish
  • Blooms in late winter to spring
  • Highly influential parent in Maudiae-type hybrids

Care Tips:

  • Light: Low to medium light (typical mottled-leaf Paphiopedilum)
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; never allow to dry completely
  • Humidity: 50–70% preferred
  • Potting: Fine, well-draining mix (bark + perlite or sphagnum blends)
  • Airflow: Gentle airflow to prevent fungal issues
  • Seasonal cue: Slightly reduce watering in winter to encourage blooming
