Paphiopedilum wenshanense

Paphiopedilum wenshanense is a rare Brachypetalum-section Paphiopedilum native to southeastern Yunnan, China.

The plant is compact, producing 4–5 attractive, tessellated leaves. The leaves are dark and pale green on the upper surface and often show a purple coloration underneath, giving the plant ornamental value even when it is not flowering. The upright flower spike carries 1–3 flowers, generally around 5–7 cm across. The flowers are whitish to yellow-white, decorated with distinctive brown-red spotting and longitudinal markings.

Care Tips:

• Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Avoid strong direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Moderate light is generally suitable for Brachypetalum Paphiopedilums.
• Watering: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Do not allow the roots to remain completely dry for extended periods.
• Growing Medium: Use a well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine bark, perlite, and suitable organic material. Because the species naturally grows on limestone, a slightly mineral-rich medium can be beneficial.
• Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, together with good air circulation.
• Temperature: Intermediate conditions are suitable. Aim for approximately 18–26°C (65–79°F), with slightly cooler nights beneficial.
• Fertilizing: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer at diluted strength during active growth. Flush the medium periodically to prevent fertilizer salt accumulation.
• Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow, especially when humidity is high.
• Potting: Use a relatively small pot with excellent drainage. Avoid burying the crown too deeply.
• Flowering: Keep conditions stable while buds are developing. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, light, or watering.
