Paraphalaenopsis labukensis × serpentilingua is a hybrid orchid combining two Paraphalaenopsis species from Borneo. This plant produces pendulous, terete (cylindrical) foliage that can grow several feet long, making it striking when displayed hanging. The inflorescences emerge from the base of mature growths and carry 2–3″ flowers in summer and fall, often with a pleasant fragrance. Like its parents, it prefers conditions that mimic its native humid tropical rainforest habitat and shows elegant cascading growth and ornamental blooms.

Care Tips:

  • Light

    • Bright, filtered light

    • Avoid strong direct sunlight, especially midday sun

    • East-facing windows or shaded west light work well

  • Watering

    • Keep roots consistently moist but never waterlogged

    • Water frequently during warm, active growth periods

    • Reduce watering slightly during cooler months

    • Ensure excellent drainage after each watering

  • Temperature

    • Prefers warm to intermediate conditions

    • Ideal range: 18–30 °C (65–86 °F)

    • Avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures

  • Humidity

    • High humidity is essential: 60–80%

    • Use humidifiers or regular misting

    • Always combine high humidity with good air movement

  • Air Circulation

    • Strong air circulation is critical

    • Prevents fungal issues and root rot, especially in humid environments

  • Mounting / Growing Medium

    • Best grown mounted or in hanging baskets

    • If potted, use a very open, fast-draining mix (coarse bark, charcoal, minimal sphagnum)

    • Allows long, pendulous leaves to hang freely

  • Fertilizing

    • Feed regularly during active growth with diluted orchid fertilizer

    • Apply at low strength but more frequently

    • Flush with plain water occasionally to prevent salt buildup

  • Rest Period

    • No strict dormancy, but growth slows slightly in cooler seasons

    • Reduce watering and fertilizer accordingly
