Phalaenopsis lobbii is an epiphytic orchid native to the eastern Himalayas—spanning northeastern India (Assam, Sikkim), Bhutan, Myanmar, Vietnam, and southern China—thriving at elevations typically between 366 and 1,200 meters. It grows in evergreen lowland, mixed broadleaf, and coniferous forests, often on mossy, old tree trunks and branches.

Features:

  • A miniature monopodial orchid, usually bearing 1–2 (sometimes up to 3–5) thin, elliptic leaves that are often shed during a natural winter rest period.

  • Forms racemose inflorescences, usually 10 cm long, carrying 3 to 7 sequentially opening flowers during its bloom season (often spring).

  • The flowers are small (about 1.5–2.5 cm across), star-shaped, cream-white with a reflexed shape and a mid-lobe (lip) that shows brown or caramel color.

  • As noted by growers: “short inflorescences from base carry two to eight white flowers with showy caramel-striped lip”.

Care Tips:

Light

  • Tolerates higher light levels than many Phalaenopsis1,200–1,800 foot-candles (about 12,000–18,000 lux) of bright, indirect light is ideal.

  • Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun to prevent leaf damage.

Temperature & Seasonal Rhythm

  • Summer (growth season): Day temps around 30–31 °C (85–87 °F), nights 21–23 °C (70–74 °F) with a diurnal drop of about 7–9 °C.

  • Winter rest: Cooler days around 22–28 °C, nights as low as 8–14 °C (sometimes near 4 °C); reduced watering during this time is essential for flowering and plant survival.

Humidity & Watering

  • Requires high humidity, around 75–85% in summer, still remains relatively high in winter thanks to fog and morning dew in its native habitat.

  • Moist growing season, with a distinct wet/dry cycle: keep moist when active, but reduce water significantly in the rest period, allowing just enough to prevent dehydration (e.g., morning misting).

Potting & Mounting

  • Grows well in ½–⅝″ fir bark mix, or mounted on cork/tree-fern slab with a bit of sphagnum or moss under the roots—repot after flowering in early spring.

  • Some growers prefer mounting but still emphasize the need for consistent humidity and protection from overwatering, especially in winter.

Fertilizer

  • Use ¼–½ strength orchid fertilizer weekly during the growing season. Omit during the rest period.

  • Another source recommends feeding ½ strength once per week after watering.
