Phalaenopsis lowii, commonly known as Low's Phalaenopsis, is a distinctive and rare species of orchid native to the lowland regions of Myanmar and Borneo. It thrives in areas with abundant rainfall and is often seen growing on bare limestone rocks or on twigs of small shrubs rooted in rock crevices. These habitats are usually exposed to morning sunlight but are shaded in the afternoon, providing a balanced light environment for the orchids.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to place the plant in a location where it receives filtered light.
-
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 25°C (64°F to 77°F). Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 15°C (59°F) to prevent stress.
-
Humidity: High humidity levels are essential, ideally between 60% and 80%. Regular misting or the use of a humidity tray can help maintain the required moisture levels.
-
Watering: Water the plant regularly, allowing the potting medium to dry slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
-
Fertilization: During the growing season, apply a balanced orchid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Reduce feeding during the dormant period to avoid over-fertilization.
-
Rest Period: Phalaenopsis lowii experiences a rest period during the dry season. During this time, reduce watering and maintain slightly cooler temperatures to mimic its natural environment.
