Phalaenopsis subparishii is a rare, miniature epiphytic orchid endemic to southern China. It thrives in humid subtropical to tropical forests at elevations of 300–1,100 meters above sea level and is typically found growing on tree trunks in provinces such as Fujian, Guangdong, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, and Zhejiang.

Features:

  • Size: A mini-miniature epiphyte with a short stem measuring 1 to 1.5 cm in length.

  • Leaves: 1–10 cm long and 2.4–3.3 cm wide, alternate, oblong to obovate-lanceolate, slightly obtuse-bilobed apically, amplexicaul, and clasping at the base.

  • Inflorescence: An arching, racemose flower spike 9 to 10 cm long, bearing several slightly fleshy, scented flowers.

  • Flowers: Yellowish-green with pale brown spots on the adaxial surface of the sepals and petals; the midlobe of the labellum has lavender spotting. The horn-shaped spur ranges from 0.9 to 1.1 cm in length.

  • Pollinia: Four in two pairs.

Care Tips:

Temperature

  • Daytime: Maintain between 65–75°F (18–24°C).

  • Nighttime: Around 55°F (13°C).

  • Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C) to prevent growth cessation and potential bud loss.

Light

  • Ideal Light: Bright, indirect light.

  • Placement: Position near an east or west-facing window, filtered by a sheer curtain to prevent direct midday sun.

Watering

  • Frequency: Water approximately once a week, allowing the medium to dry out between waterings.

  • Method: Use warm, non-chlorinated water.

  • Technique: Water thoroughly, ensuring complete drainage to prevent root rot.

Humidity

  • Optimal Level: Maintain humidity between 60–70%.

  • Increase Humidity: Place the pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles, ensuring the pot sits above the water level.

Potting Medium

  • Recommended Mix: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as bark, sphagnum moss, or perlite.

  • Container: Opt for clear pots to monitor root health.

Fertilization

  • Growing Season: Apply diluted orchid fertilizer every 1–2 weeks during spring and summer.

  • Dormant Period: Reduce or halt fertilization during fall and winter.

Repotting

  • Frequency: Repot every 1–2 years or when the potting medium breaks down.

  • Timing: Avoid repotting during the blooming period to minimize stress.

Flowering

  • Blooming Season: Typically blooms in spring or early summer.

  • Encouraging Blooms: Provide consistent care and avoid environmental stressors.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing Leaves: May indicate overwatering or insufficient light.

  • Root Rot: Ensure proper drainage and avoid water accumulation in the pot.

  • Pests: Regularly inspect for common orchid pests and treat promptly.
