Microsorum membranifolium, commonly known as the pimple fern or membranous fern, is a strikingly unique epiphytic and lithophytic species within the Polypodiaceae family. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of South and Southeast Asia—including Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and parts of Australia—it thrives in humid, shaded rainforest environments, particularly along streambanks or on moist rock surfaces.
Features:
-
Rhizome: Short, creeping, fleshy, and covered in dense, glossy brown scales measuring approximately 2.8–4.4 × 1–3.2 mm.
-
Fronds: Rigid yet papery in texture, ranging from 7.5 cm to over 1 m long, with deeply pinnatifid lamina and narrow, strap-shaped lobes extending 4.5–41 cm.
-
Sori: Characteristic rounded to conical protuberances 3–6 mm wide, deeply impressed into the frond surface, giving rise to the common name “pimple fern”.
Care Tips:
-
Growing medium: Thrives in hanging baskets or mounted setups using coarse, well-draining substrates like orchid bark or coconut coir.
-
Light requirements: Prefers shady to semi-shady conditions—avoid direct sunlight to preserve delicate fronds .
-
Water & humidity: Requires consistently moist environments; ideal in humid terrariums or near water features; mist regularly.
-
Temperature: Comfortable in warm climates typical of tropical regions; sensitive to cold.
-
Propagation: Mainly through rhizome division; spores are possible but slower and more specialized.
