Polystichum carvifolium (formerly P. caruifolium and historically known as Aspidium caruifolium, with P. omeiense as another synonym) is a member of the family Dryopteridaceae, within the genus Polystichum—a group of evergreen or semi-evergreen ferns characterized by pinnate fronds that often form rosettes. This species is native to China, particularly Sichuan Province on Mt. Emei, where it grows at mid-elevations of about 900–2500 m in shaded, humid mountain forest slopes, favoring moist understory conditions.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Avoid direct sun which can scorch fronds.
-
Temperature: Moderate mountain temperatures; avoid extremes of heat. Keep it cool-temperate during warm seasons and protect it from frost.
-
Humidity: High humidity will help it thrive. Regular misting or a humid environment is beneficial.
-
Soil / Medium: Use a well-draining, humus-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil mix. Including leaf mold, bark chips and peat helps.
-
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Poor drainage can cause root or crown rot.
-
Maintenance: Remove dead fronds to keep the plant tidy, allow airflow around base.
