Polystichum ichangense is a charming evergreen fern native to mountainous regions of central and southern China, where it grows mainly in rock crevices within montane broad-leaved forests at around 1,000–1,600 m (3,300–5,250 ft). It forms a compact clump of narrow, elegant fronds, with each frond typically 14–48 cm (5.5–19 in) long and composed of numerous closely spaced, slightly reflexed pinnae. The fresh green foliage has a graceful, finely textured appearance, while the brown-scaled rhizome and rachis add attractive contrast. Its relatively compact habit and evergreen foliage make P. ichangense an excellent choice for shaded rock gardens, woodland displays, and fern collections.

Care Tips:

  • Provide bright, indirect light to partial shade, avoiding strong direct afternoon sun.
  • Keep the substrate consistently lightly moist, especially during active growth, but avoid stagnant or waterlogged conditions.
  • Use a well-draining, humus-rich substrate with good moisture retention and slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
  • Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, with gentle air circulation.
  • Prefer cool to intermediate temperatures, particularly during the growing season, reflecting its montane habitat.
  • Fertilize lightly during active growth with a balanced, diluted fertilizer.
  • Avoid excessive disturbance of the rhizome; repot when the growing medium has decomposed or when the plant has clearly outgrown its container.
