Selaginella iridescens, commonly known as Rainbow Spikemoss, is a recently described ground-covering plant (first described in 2021) native to Hainan Island, China. It belongs to the Selaginellaceae family and is renowned for its stunning blue-green leaves and unique "resurrection" ability. This plant is well-suited for terrariums, thriving in high-humidity, controlled environments.
This plant features leaves with a striking iridescent effect, created by interference from the leaf's surface layer. The color changes help reduce the damage caused by strong light filtering through the canopy. Additionally, Selaginella iridescens exhibits a "resurrection" characteristic, where its leaves curl during drought but unfurl and revive once moisture is restored.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers indirect light and thrives in shaded areas. Avoid direct sunlight.
-
Humidity: Requires a high-humidity environment, ideally above 60%.
-
Temperature: Grows best between 18°C and 25°C.
-
Soil: Needs well-draining, moisture-retentive soil. A mix of peat moss and perlite is ideal.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
