Renanthera citrina is a small epiphytic (occasionally lithophytic) orchid species native to Vietnam and nearby regions. It grows on mossy tree trunks or rocky limestone bluffs in humid forests at mid-elevations (about 650–1200 m).
Features:
-
Plant Size: Small-sized orchid with a short woody stem and pendulous growth habit.
-
Leaves: Narrow to lanceolate, rigid, leathery, curved, unequally bilobed at the tip.
-
Inflorescences: Long spikes (up to ~45 cm) carrying up to ~25 small flowers.
-
Flowers: Bright lemon-yellow star-shaped blooms with purple-violet spotting and no fragrance.
-
Bloom Season: Typically winter into spring.
Care Tips:
• Light
-
Provide very bright light — similar to Vanda-type orchids.
-
Bright filtered light with some morning or late afternoon direct sun is ideal.
• Temperature
-
Prefers intermediate to warm conditions (approx. 23–28 °C / 73–82 °F day).
-
Slight drop at night can be beneficial; avoid prolonged cold.
• Watering
-
Keep the plant evenly moist during active growth, but never sitting in water.
-
Allow roots to dry slightly between waterings, especially if mounted.
• Humidity
-
High humidity (60–85%) is important — misting or a humidity tray helps.
-
Ensure humidity is balanced with good air circulation.
• Air Circulation
-
Strong airflow prevents rot and mimics its natural breezy habitat.
• Growing Medium / Mounting
-
Best grown mounted on cork/wood or in hanging baskets with very airy medium.
-
If potted, use a fast-draining, coarse mix so roots never stay wet.
• Fertilizing
-
During growth seasons, fertilize lightly and regularly with diluted orchid fertilizer.
-
Reduce feeding in cooler periods.
• Rest Period / Dormancy
-
In winter, growth slows; reduce watering and let roots dry more between waterings.
