Renanthera coccinea

Renanthera coccinea is a large, monopodial orchid species native across parts of Southeast and East Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, southern China (Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan), and Hong Kong. It naturally grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte on tree branches or open rocks in forests and bluffs at low to mid elevations (100–1200 m).

Features:

• Growth Habit: Monopodial, can reach over 1 m tall; grows as an epiphyte on trees or a lithophyte on rocks.

• Leaves: Thick, fleshy, oblong leaves arranged in two ranks along the stem.

• Inflorescence: Long, branched spikes in spring with many scarlet or red flowers, each about 5–6 cm wide.

• Ornamental Appeal: Striking red flowers give a “flame-like” appearance, highly valued by growers.

Care Tips:

• Light

  • Provide very bright light — closer to Vanda-like conditions.

  • Can tolerate some direct sun, especially morning or late afternoon, but avoid harsh midday rays.

• Temperature

  • Prefers intermediate to warm climates, roughly 19–30 °C (67–86 °F).

  • Avoid sustained cold conditions below about 15 °C (59 °F).

• Watering

  • Water regularly especially during active growth; keep roots moist but not waterlogged.

  • Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

• Humidity

  • High humidity (60 %+) is ideal; humidity trays, misting, or humidifiers help.

• Air Circulation

  • Excellent airflow is important — it helps reduce disease and mimics natural forest conditions.

• Growing Medium / Mounting

  • Grows well mounted on cork or wood or in open baskets.

  • If potted, use a very open, well-draining mix (coarse bark, charcoal, etc.).

• Fertilizing

  • Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season; dilute to about half strength.

  • Regular feeding supports vigorous growth and flower production.

• Flowering

  • Typically blooms in spring, with long, showy inflorescences of vibrant scarlet blooms.
