Renanthera philippinensis × Vanda falcata is a hybrid between Vanda (Neofinetia) falcata and Renanthera philippinensis. R. philippinensis is a vigorous, warm-growing epiphyte from the Philippines with leathery, bilobed leaves and sprays of bright red to orange flowers, while V. falcata is a small, delicate wind orchid from Japan/Korea with narrow, slightly falcate leaves and fragrant, spur-bearing blooms.
Features:
-
Flower color: typically vibrant red to orange-red, inheriting the fiery tones from Renanthera.
-
Flower size: blooms can be about 1″ (≈ 2.5 cm) wide and 1.5–2″ long, with a short spur visible on the back.
-
Fragrance: reported to have a strong fragrance.
-
Blooming season: this hybrid can bloom from spring to fall.
-
Growth habit: likely to have a compact form compared to pure Renanthera, combining some of the miniaturized aspects of V. falcata.
Care Tips:
-
Light
-
Provide bright, filtered light. Avoid very harsh midday sun.
-
Neofinetia (V. falcata) likes quite a lot of light, but not necessarily blazing direct sun.
-
-
Temperature
-
This hybrid enjoys warm to intermediate temperatures, reflecting the Renanthera parent.
-
V. falcata (Neofinetia) is quite tolerant: it can handle a wide range from cool to warm, though ideal is something like ~24°C (75°F) day / ~16°C (60°F) night.

Humidity & Airflow
-
Moderate to high humidity is beneficial. Many Renanthera species prefer humidity in the 60-80% range.
-
Excellent air circulation is very important — helps prevent rot and supports healthy root growth.
-
-
Watering
-
If grown bare-root or mounted, water more frequently (daily in hot/warm conditions), but allow roots to dry somewhat between waterings.
-
During cooler months, reduce water frequency to avoid soggy roots. Neofinetia specifically likes the media to dry a little between waterings.
-
Use clean water (rainwater, distilled, or RO water if possible) — especially important for Neofinetia-type roots.
-
-
Potting / Mounting Medium
-
Use a very airy, well-draining medium, such as coarse bark, or mount it on cork or wood. This hybrid benefits from good drainage and great aeration around its roots.
-
Hanging baskets work well. Some growers maintain these on open mounts for better airflow.
-
-
Fertilizer
-
Regular feeding is helpful, especially during active growth. Use a balanced orchid fertilizer.
-
In warm/wet growing seasons, fertilize more frequently; reduce during periods of slower growth.
-
-
Bloom Spike Maintenance
-
After flowering, trim spent flower spikes to encourage future blooms and redirect energy to new growth.
-
Inspect roots regularly for signs of rot or damage, especially if mounted or in an open basket.
