Seidenfadenia mitrata

Seidenfadenia mitrata is a distinctive miniature to small monopodial epiphytic orchid native to Myanmar and Thailand, where it grows in seasonally dry forests. It produces long, pendant or arching stems densely covered with thick, cylindrical, terete leaves that give the plant a unique cascading appearance. In spring, and sometimes again in autumn under cultivation, it bears numerous small, fragrant flowers arranged along short inflorescences emerging between the leaves. The blooms are typically white with soft pink to lavender markings and a vivid magenta-purple lip, creating an elegant contrast. As the only species in its genus, it is especially valued by orchid collectors for its unusual foliage, graceful hanging habit, and charming floral display.

Care Tips:

• Provide bright, filtered light similar to Vanda orchids, avoiding prolonged harsh midday sun.
• Grow mounted on cork, hardwood, or in an open basket with little or no water-retentive medium to ensure rapid root drying.
• Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures during active growth with good air circulation and moderate to high humidity.
• Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the roots to dry slightly between waterings; reduce watering significantly during the cooler, dormant period.
• Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, as they are prone to rot, especially in cool conditions.
• Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength during active growth, reducing feeding during the rest period.
• Repot or remount only when necessary, preferably as new root growth begins, since the thick roots dislike disturbance.
