Selaginella cf. willdenowii variegated exhibits exceptional variegation. The foliage is predominantly green, overlaid with extensive yellow to creamy-white variegated sectors that cover a large portion of the leaf surface. The variegation is bright and well-defined, giving the plant a striking appearance. Notably, even in non-variegated areas, the plant shows an intense blue iridescence; its blue coloration is markedly stronger than that observed in other blue-toned Selaginella species I have encountered.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Variegated forms require slightly higher light levels than non-variegated plants, but direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch and fading of variegation.

  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. This species is sensitive to drying out; even short periods of drought may cause irreversible damage.

  • Humidity: High humidity is essential. Maintain humidity above 70% for optimal growth and color expression. Terrarium or enclosed environments are strongly recommended.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions between 20–28 °C (68–82 °F). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C (59 °F).

  • Substrate: Use a well-draining yet moisture-retentive mix, such as sphagnum moss combined with fine bark, perlite, or fern fiber.

  • Air circulation: Gentle air movement is beneficial, but avoid strong airflow that can dry out the foliage.

  • Fertilization: Feed lightly with a highly diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth. Over-fertilization may reduce coloration and damage delicate roots.

  • Color expression: Strong blue iridescence and stable variegation are best maintained under high humidity, stable moisture, and moderate light.
