Shizhenia pinguicula (syn. Amitostigma pinguicula) is a rare terrestrial orchid species endemic to southeast China that grows from an ovoid tuber and typically produces a single basal leaf and one relatively large flower; in the wild it occurs on moist, rocky soils in forests, grasslands, and valleys at low elevations.
Features:
-
Growth habit: Terrestrial orchid growing from an ovoid tuber with a single leaf near the base of the stem.
-
Habitat: Native to moist, rocky soils in forests, grasslands, and valleys at low elevations (about 200–400 m) in China.
-
Flowering: Produces one (rarely two) flowers with a three‑lobed lip; historically also known under the name Amitostigma pinguicula.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light; avoid intense direct sun to prevent leaf and flower damage.
-
Water: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but well‑drained; do not let the plant sit in stagnant water.
-
Temperature: Maintain cool to intermediate temperatures closer to its natural subtropical conditions.
-
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity supports healthy foliage and flower development.
-
Substrate: Use a well‑draining, orchid‑appropriate mix (e.g., bark with some moisture retention components).
-
Airflow: Good ventilation helps prevent fungal or bacterial issues around the base and foliage.
