Changnienia amoena is the only species in the monotypic genus Changnienia, belonging to the orchid family Orchidaceae, subtribe Calypsoinae. Described in 1935, it is a terrestrial orchid that grows on the ground rather than epiphytically and possesses pseudobulbs—swollen underground or at-ground storage organs. Each plant typically bears a single, solitary leaf and produces one fairly large flower, about 6.5 cm across, with a purplish-pink or pinkish coloration. This species is found in China at altitudes ranging from approximately 400 m to over 1,700 m, thriving in moist mountain forests, often in shaded and damp soils. Adapted to cool, forested environments rather than tropical lowlands, C. amoena has a fragmented and restricted population, making it highly sensitive to environmental changes.

Features:

  • Monotypic genus: the fact the genus only contains this one species makes it evolutionarily intriguing.

  • Unique growth habit: single leaf + single flower is uncommon in many terrestrial orchids.

  • Aesthetics: its flower is described as elegant and delicate, making it a rewarding species for orchid enthusiasts who can meet its requirements.

Care Tips:

  • Light:

    • Prefers shaded or dappled light, like a forest floor.

    • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Temperature:

    • Cool to intermediate (10–22 °C).

    • Can tolerate near 0 °C in dormancy, but avoid frost.

  • Humidity:

    • Maintain 60–80% humidity.

    • Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.

  • Watering:

    • Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy.

    • Reduce watering during winter dormancy.

    • Use soft water or rainwater if possible.

  • Soil / Substrate:

    • Use a well-draining, humus-rich mix (e.g., leaf mold, peat, perlite, pine needles).

  • Fertilizer:

    • Apply weak orchid fertilizer (¼ strength) every 2–3 weeks in the growing season.

    • Stop fertilizing after flowering and during dormancy.

  • Dormancy:

    • Leaves may die back after flowering — this is normal.

    • Keep cool, slightly dry, and shaded until new growth appears.

  • Special Notes:

    • Very sensitive roots — avoid frequent repotting.

    • Depends on fungal symbiosis for healthy growth — handle gently.
