Solanum uleanum is a creeping herbaceous vine in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) native to the eastern Andean slopes from Ecuador to Peru, typically found in primary tropical forest at elevations of about 200-1200 m.
Feature:
-
When young, its leaves display a neon purple hue and are covered in fine hairs (giving a soft fuzzy texture). As they mature, the color often transitions to deeper greens.
-
The foliage is often segmented or lobed (depending on growth stage).
-
It’s often marketed as a terrarium plant or for humid all-indoor displays due to its sensitivity and aesthetic foliage.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; it can tolerate lower light levels. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
-
Water / Moisture: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Let the top layer dry slightly before watering again.
-
Humidity: High humidity is critical. Many sellers recommend growing in terrariums or humid environments.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm to moderate tropical conditions; avoid exposing it to low or cold temperatures.
-
Soil / Substrate: Use a well-draining mix, possibly combining organic matter with perlite or similar amendments for aeration.
-
Fertilization: Since it can grow relatively fast, replenish nutrients (with a gentle organic fertilizer) about every 1–2 months (or more frequently during active growth).
-
Other Notes:
• It may drop leaves if environmental conditions are suboptimal (especially humidity or light)
• Handle acclimation to new environments gradually (especially humidity changes)
