Stereochilus xiaoi is a rare and diminutive epiphytic orchid native to southern China, particularly the Yunnan region. It was first described in 2010 by H. Jiang and Y. Zhang in Wild Orchids of Yunnan.
Features:
-
Growth Habit: Monopodial with semi-terete leaves.
-
Leaves: Lanceolate to semiterete, approximately 13.5 cm long and 1 cm wide.
-
Inflorescence: Pendant, arching, approximately 8 cm long, bearing up to 19 small, fragrant flowers.
-
Flowers: White with a magenta-pink blush; the lip is saccate with a cylindrical spur.
-
Size: Overall plant height is about 37 cm.
Care Tips:
Light
-
Bright, Indirect Light: Place your orchid in a location with bright, indirect light. An east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering
-
Moderate Watering: Water the plant when the top of the growing medium feels dry to the touch. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from sitting at the bottom.
Temperature
-
Warm Temperatures: Maintain temperatures between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Humidity
-
High Humidity: Provide humidity levels between 50% and 70%. In drier environments, consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier.
Growing Medium
-
Well-Draining Medium: Use a mix suitable for epiphytic orchids, such as a combination of sphagnum moss and orchid bark. Ensure the medium drains well to prevent root rot.
Fertilization
-
Balanced Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows.
Mounting
-
Epiphytic Growth: Consider mounting the orchid on a piece of cork bark or in a basket to mimic its natural growing conditions. This can encourage more natural growth habits.
