Hoya kerrii, commonly known as the “Sweetheart Hoya” or “Heart-Leaf Hoya,” is native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and parts of Indonesia. It is easily recognized by its thick, green, succulent, leathery leaves shaped like hearts, making it a popular gift plant, especially for Valentine’s Day. In its natural habitat, it grows as a climbing vine, attaching to trees with aerial roots and reaching lengths of up to about 4 m (13 ft). Mature plants produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers with creamy-white petals and red or burgundy centers during the summer months.

Features:

  • Thick, succulent, leathery green leaves that are shaped like hearts — the characteristic “sweetheart” look.

  • A climbing or trailing vine in its natural form, capable of reaching up to ~4 m (≈13 ft) if given space and mature stem.

  • Produces clusters (umbels) of small, star-shaped flowers (typically creamy-white corollas with red or burgundy centres) in the right conditions.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct midday sun which can scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Allow the potting mix to dry somewhat between waterings. Over-watering or soggy soil leads to root issues. Better to err on the side of slight dryness.

  • Soil & Drainage: Use a well-draining, airy mix (for example with perlite, orchid bark or similar amendments) and ensure the pot has drainage.

  • Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm, humid conditions. Indoor room temperatures (~60-80 °F or ~15-27 °C) are ideal; avoid cold drafts and low humidity.

  • Growth / Blooming: Being slow-growing, patience is needed. To encourage blooming, allow it to become lightly root-bound, provide good light, and avoid frequent repotting.
