Tainia speciosa Blume is a small to medium-sized terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae. It is a pseudobulbous geophyte native from Thailand through western Malesia, including Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo.
The plant develops glossy, sheathed pseudobulbs, each bearing a single attractive, pleated leaf. A basal flowering stem rises from the pseudobulb and can reach approximately 45 cm, carrying several flowers. The flowers are relatively large for the plant, reported at around 10 cm across, making this one of the more showy species in the genus Tainia.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright filtered light to partial shade. Avoid strong midday direct sunlight, especially during hot weather.
- Watering: Keep the growing medium evenly moist during active growth, while allowing excess water to drain freely. Avoid keeping the roots constantly saturated.
- Growing Medium: Use an airy, well-draining orchid mix containing fine or medium bark, sphagnum, perlite or similar materials. The medium should retain moisture without becoming compacted.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity, around 60–80%, is beneficial. Good air circulation is important when humidity is high.
- Temperature: Warm to intermediate conditions are suitable. A general range of approximately 18–28°C (65–82°F) works well, with slightly cooler nights preferred.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt accumulation.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow to keep the foliage and growing medium from remaining stagnant and overly wet.
- Potting: Use a pot with good drainage and avoid oversized containers. Because the pseudobulbs are relatively compact, a smaller pot is generally preferable.
- Repotting: Repot when the medium starts to break down or when new growth begins. Avoid unnecessary disturbance of the roots.
- Flowering: Good filtered light, consistent moisture and active growth help encourage the long basal inflorescences and large flowers.
