Crepidomanes minutum, commonly known as the tiny bristle fern, is a diminutive epiphytic fern native to tropical regions across the Pacific, including Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Australia. Belonging to the Hymenophyllaceae family, this species is renowned for its delicate, translucent fronds and moss-like appearance.
Features:
-
Frond Size: Approximately 1/4" to 1/2" (6–12 mm) in diameter
-
Growth Habit: Epiphytic or epipetric, often resembling moss
-
Reproduction: Primarily through spores; some populations exhibit apogamous reproduction
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide low to medium, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent desiccation. Ideal conditions mimic the shaded understory of tropical forests.
-
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 22°C and 26°C (72°F to 79°F). Cooler temperatures may slow growth, while warmer conditions can increase evaporation rates.
-
Humidity: High humidity is crucial. Aim for 90–100% relative humidity. Utilize sealed enclosures like glass terrariums or aquariums to maintain moisture levels. Regular misting can also help, but ensure the fronds do not dry out between mistings.
-
Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use distilled or rainwater to prevent mineral buildup. Avoid allowing the substrate to dry out completely.
-
Substrate: Grow on sterilized sphagnum moss, wet wood, wet rocks, or Hygrolon. Ensure the substrate remains moist and free from competing mosses or other plants that could smother the fern.
-
Air Circulation: Maintain minimal air movement to prevent desiccation. While some airflow is necessary to prevent mold, excessive ventilation can dry out the delicate fronds.
-
Fertilization: Fertilize sparingly. Use a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season, but avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm the plant.
