Dendrobium secundum, commonly known as the Toothbrush Orchid, is a striking epiphytic species native to Southeast Asia, including regions such as Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It thrives in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and savanna-like hill woodlands at elevations ranging from sea level to 700 meters.

Features:

  • Origin: Found in regions including Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Peninsular Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, New Guinea, and the Philippines.

  • Habitat: Thrives in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and savanna-like hill woodlands at elevations up to 700 meters.

  • Growth Form: An epiphytic species with semi-pendulous, cane-like stems reaching up to 80 cm in length. The stems are stout, tapering at both ends, and grooved when mature. Leaves are oblong to oblong-lanceolate, persistent, and unequally bilobed at the apex.

  • Flowers: The inflorescence emerges from near the apex of leafless canes, bearing 40–60 waxy, glossy, fragrant flowers. Each flower is approximately 1.6 cm long and 0.6 cm broad, with a pale pink to purple hue and an orange labellum at the apex. The flowers remain semi-closed and last 2–3 weeks.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Protect from temperatures below 15°C (59°F).

  • Humidity: Maintain humidity levels between 50% and 70%.

  • Watering: Water generously during the growing season, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler months.

  • Fertilization: Fertilize weekly with a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season. Reduce fertilization during the cooler months.

  • Potting Medium: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as one containing bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.

  • Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal and bacterial diseases.
