Trichoglottis pusilla is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to the montane forests of Java and Sumatra, Indonesia. This species thrives at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters, growing on isolated tree branches in bright, filtered light.

Features:

  • Size & Growth Habit: Trichoglottis pusilla is a compact, monopodial epiphyte characterized by its slender, strap-shaped leaves measuring 5.5–12 cm in length and 1 cm in width. The plant typically grows to a height of 8–15 cm.

  • Flowers: The orchid produces 2–3 fragrant, pale green to purple-tinged flowers per inflorescence. Each flower is approximately 2.3 cm in diameter, with white sepals and petals adorned with thin, transverse red stripes. The lip is white with a yellowish center and purple markings.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. A location less than 3 feet from a south-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 22–24°C (72–75°F) during the day and 12–14°C (54–57°F) at night, with a daily temperature variation of 7–11°C.

  • Humidity: Ensure high humidity levels, ranging from 75% to 80%, to mimic its native environment.

  • Watering: Water the plant regularly, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter rest period and avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent root rot.

  • Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the winter rest period.

  • Mounting: Grow the orchid mounted on smooth hardwood or cork bark to ensure good air circulation and rapid drying between waterings.
