Whip-leafed Brassavola (Brassavola flagellaris) is a species of epiphytic orchid in the family Orchidaceae, belonging to the genus Brassavola. It is known for its slender growth habit and fragrant flowers, and is endemic to eastern Brazil, particularly from Minas Gerais to Paraná.
Flowers:
-
Flowers have narrow light-green sepals and petals with a broad white lip, often surrounding the central column.
-
Blooms are fragrant, especially in the evening or night.
-
Inflorescences can carry multiple flowers on erect or pendulous stems.
-
Flower size is typically around 6–7.5 cm (≈2.5–3 inches) across.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright light, including some direct sun. It tolerates stronger light than many orchids and benefits from high light levels to bloom well.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm to intermediate temperatures (about 18–30 °C / 65–86 °F). It can tolerate slight nighttime drops.
-
Water: Water regularly during active growth, allowing roots to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in cooler or less active periods, but do not let it stay dry for too long.
-
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (50–70%) is ideal, combined with good air circulation to prevent rot.
-
Growing Medium: Best grown mounted on bark or in very open, fast-draining media such as coarse bark or mounted culture, as roots need excellent airflow.
-
Fertilizer: Feed lightly but regularly during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer at low strength.
-
Air Movement: Good ventilation is essential, especially in warm and humid conditions.
