Bulbophyllum gracillimum is a small epiphytic orchid species in the genus Bulbophyllum, commonly called the wispy umbrella orchid or graceful Bulbophyllum because of its delicate floral appearance.

Features:

  • It grows as a creeping plant with a creeping rhizome and widely spaced, olive-green pseudobulbs, each bearing a single thick, leathery leaf at the tip.

  • The flowers are arranged in a semi-circular umbel of 6–10 blooms, typically purplish-red with long, thread-like extensions on the lateral sepals, giving a wispy, umbrella-like effect.

  • This species is found as an epiphyte on tree trunks in humid tropical rainforests across Southeast Asia and the southwestern Pacific, including New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Caledonia, Fiji, and Queensland, Australia.

  • The slender form and elegant flower structure make it popular with orchid collectors and ideal for mounting on wood or growing in humid terrarium environments.

Care Tips:

Light

  • Provide bright but indirect light — avoid strong direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.

  • Ideal light level is similar to dappled rainforest shade.

Temperature

  • Prefers warm to hot conditions (about 20–28 °C / 68–82 °F).

  • Can tolerate slightly cooler nights but avoid cold drafts.

Humidity

  • High humidity (65–85%+) is important for healthy growth.

  • Good air movement helps prevent rot and supports flowering.

Watering

  • Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged.

  • Water more frequently in warm, active growth periods; reduce only slightly when growth slows.

Growing Medium

  • Best grown mounted on cork/wood or in a very well-draining mix (fine bark + sphagnum).

  • Avoid compact, dense potting mixes that hold too much water.

Fertilizer

  • Feed lightly and regularly (e.g., weekly during active growth) with an orchid-balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Airflow & Microclimate

  • Ensure good ventilation to mimic natural rainforest breeze.

  • A terrarium/greenhouse environment often works well if humidity is high and air circulates.

Flowering

  • It produces wiry inflorescences with fragrant clusters of 6–10 flowers above the leaves.
